Today, we delve into the creation of a Fujifilm recipe titled ‘Metrocity 1973,’ designed to evoke the warm, vintage feel of urban life in the early 1970s using the Classic Chrome film simulation. The 1970s were a transformative decade marked by vibrant cultural shifts, political changes, and unique aesthetic trends. Cities were bustling with life, characterized by a mix of grit and glamour, a sense of both decay and renewal.
The warm tones of Kodachrome film, the grainy texture of everyday life, and the striking contrast of cityscapes defined the photographic style of this period. ‘Metrocity 1973’ seeks to encapsulate this essence through a carefully crafted Fujifilm recipe.
The ‘Metrocity 1973’ recipe is designed to transport photographers and viewers back to the early 1970s, capturing the essence of urban life during that era. Whether you’re photographing bustling city streets, vintage cars, or candid street scenes, this recipe will infuse your images with a warm, nostalgic glow.
Classic Chrome is the foundation of this recipe, providing a muted color palette that is reminiscent of vintage film. Its subdued tones and slightly cool cast are perfect for creating a nostalgic feel. To evoke the warm tones of the 1970s, we increase the color setting. This adjustment enhances the saturation, making the colors more vivid and pronounced, which is essential for achieving the retro aesthetic.
Setting the white balance to 6300K with a slight shift towards red (+2) and a minor adjustment away from blue (-1) adds a warm, golden hue to the images. This combination mimics the warmth often seen in vintage film simulation recipes and old photographs.
Depending on the lighting conditions, adjusting the exposure compensation helps to control the overall brightness of the image. Slight underexposure adds to the vintage feel, preventing the highlights from blowing out and maintaining the moodiness of the scene.
Increasing the clarity adds a bit of punch to the mid-tones, making the image appear crisper and more defined. It enhances the textures, which is important for capturing the gritty feel of urban environments. Increasing the dynamic range to DR200 helps to preserve details in both the highlights and shadows, contributing to a well-balanced image that captures the full range of tones seen in classic film photography.
To achieve the desired vintage look, we must carefully adjust the camera’s settings. Below are the custom settings for the ‘Metrocity 1973’ recipe.

Fujifilm’s X-Series cameras offer a unique opportunity for photographers to experiment with custom film simulations and settings, allowing them to recreate the look and feel of different eras. The ‘Metrocity 1973’ recipe, with its warm tones, pronounced contrasts, and film-like grain, is a testament to the power of these tools in evoking the spirit of a bygone time.
By carefully adjusting the camera settings as outlined above, photographers can capture the essence of 1970s urban life and create images that are both timeless and evocative. So grab your Fujifilm camera, be it an older X-Trans sensor or the 5th generation cameras, the Fujifilm X-T50, X100VI, X-H2 or GFX 100S II, set your custom settings to ‘Metrocity 1973,’ and step out into the streets to capture the soul of the city as it might have looked fifty years ago.
