Exploring Street Photography in Georgetown, Penang

It feels great to be back in Penang, especially for a holiday! This time, I was all set for another round of street photography in Georgetown. I spent three days and two nights here, similar to my last visit, but this time, I had my buddy Tommy with me to explore some new and familiar spots.

We booked an Airbnb right in the heart of Georgetown, which was super convenient. We had easy access to all the food, attractions, and historical sites, making it perfect for our street photography adventures. Everything was just a few minutes’ walk away, which made strolling around a breeze. Georgetown is filled with so much history, and every corner has something unique, whether it’s colonial architecture, vibrant street art, or bustling markets.

I was pumped about capturing some amazing street photography in Georgetown, but to be honest, my expectations were pretty high. Unfortunately, my camera didn’t catch as many great shots as I had hoped for. Still, I had a blast using my Contax G1 loaded with Kodak Gold 200 for the first time in Georgetown. I also brought along my trusty Fujifilm X-T4, which is always great for capturing those candid, fast-paced moments. To my surprise, the film shots came out sharper than I expected, which was a nice little bonus!

Whether you’re using film or digital, Georgetown offers a rich backdrop for street photography in Malaysia. There’s a lot to see and capture, but it’s also important to be patient and take your time to find those special, unplanned moments that make street photography so rewarding.

Day 1: Exploring Georgetown's Streets

We rolled into Georgetown around 12:30 PM. Since Tommy had some work to wrap up, I took some time to chill at 1st Avenue Mall. I enjoyed the air conditioning and did a little people-watching while I waited. By 3:30 PM, we checked into our Airbnb, which was a vintage-inspired spot called 7 Chulia Heritage Studio. The place had this cozy, old-world charm that totally matched the vibe of the city.

After relaxing in the cool, air-conditioned studio, we hit the streets around 4:30 PM for a solid four hours of exploring and taking photos. Our first stop was Armenian Street, which was buzzing with tourists eager to snap pictures of the famous murals. I really enjoyed the energy there, though it was a bit challenging to capture candid moments with everyone posing for their photos.

Next, we walked to Chew Jetty, which was my first time visiting. It was packed with tourists, but I managed to grab a few shots of the iconic wooden houses on stilts and the boats drifting by. The mix of rustic life with the influx of visitors created some interesting compositions. The cultural richness of the area is a treasure trove for street photographers, even if the crowd can make getting that perfect shot a bit challenging.

After a fun-filled afternoon, we planned to hit up Loudspeaker Georgetown for some karaoke. Sadly, it was fully booked. I might not be the best singer, but I was still bummed because I had been looking forward to belting out some tunes! After the long journey from Kuala Lumpur and a busy afternoon, we were pretty tired. When it started raining that night, we decided to call it a night and rest up for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: From Streets to Seaside

Day two greeted us with a blazing sun. We started the morning with a walk along Campbell Street, known for its lively morning scene. The light was just fantastic for street photography in Georgetown, but the heat was almost unbearable. After the unsuccessful attempt to sing, we decided to head back to Loudspeaker for some karaoke since we missed out the day before, feeling relieved there was room for us. After three hours of singing (yes, I was belting it out!), I was finally ready to dive back into photography.

Batu Ferringhi Penang Beaches

In the afternoon, we made our way to Batu Ferringhi Beach to catch the sunset. On the way, I spotted someone applying sunscreen on the roadside, which reminded me that I totally forgot mine! We rolled up to the beach around 4:30 PM, and it was the perfect spot to kick back with an iced drink while waiting for the golden hour. The sunset didn’t disappoint. The light dancing over the water was perfect for some stunning seaside shots, instead of photos and I managed to capture some videos with beach vibes.

As the sun dipped lower, my stomach started feeling a bit unwell, so we decided to head back to our Airbnb. I ordered some Grab food for dinner to thank Tommy for being patient waiting for a car park (you know, in Georgetown, it is hard to get parking) while I took a breather. The night turned cozy with more rain, making it a perfect end to a busy day.

Day 3: Wrapping Up with Morning Shots

We checked out early on our third day, excited to make the most of the morning light for some final street photography in Georgetown. By 8:30 AM, we were back on Armenian Street. The vibe was completely different early in the morning, with fewer tourists and more locals starting their day. It was the perfect time to capture those quieter, more authentic moments.

Next, we headed to Tan Jetty for a few more shots. Unfortunately, the heat was intense again, and I could barely see my camera’s LCD screen under the scorching sun. After struggling for a bit to get the right shot, I decided it just wasn’t worth the hassle and packed it up.

Feeling a bit hungry, we grabbed breakfast at a nearby restaurant before chilling at Jo Gourmand Café. This lovely French-style café had a relaxing vibe that was just what we needed. It was a great spot to unwind before the long drive back to Kuala Lumpur. While I didn’t come away with as many street photography gems as I hoped, I’m still really happy with a few shots I did get and all the street moments in Penang I took along the way.

Street Photography Tips for Georgetown

If you’re shooting film, don’t forget to bring extra rolls like Kodak Gold 200 or Kodak Ultramax 400 or check out the best film stocks for street photography; it’s a great choice for natural light. A VND filter is also a must, especially when shooting during bright daylight, as it helps control exposure and enhances colors.

If you don’t have a VND (Variable Neutral Density) filter yet and you’re about to embark on a trip, now is the perfect time to get one. The K&F VND filter is an essential tool for street photography, especially in bright daylight. It allows you to reduce the amount of light entering your lens without affecting the colors, enabling you to use wider apertures or slower shutter speeds even in harsh sunlight. This flexibility can help you achieve those dreamy background blurs or capture movement in a more artistic way.

Having a VND filter on hand will open up more creative possibilities for your shots, whether you’re capturing bustling street scenes or serene landscapes. Plus, it can protect your lens from dust and scratches. So, if you want to enhance your photography experience and get the best out of your travel adventure, make sure to add a VND filter to your gear before you head out!

Lastly, stay hydrated—Georgetown can get super hot! Always carry water and take breaks at local cafés to recharge.

Here are some recommended lists of things to bring when shooting street photography in Penang.

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Lightweight clothing (consider the weather)
  • Hat or cap for sun protection, Reusable water bottle
  • Portable snacks (like energy bars or nuts)

If you’re planning to dive into street photography in Georgetown, here are some tips that helped me out. First, start your shoots early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Seriously, the midday sun in Georgetown is no joke! Capturing the best light while dodging the heat can make a world of difference. Also, blending in with the locals is key.

Since Georgetown is super popular with tourists, it can be tough to get those candid shots with so many visitors around. So, try to blend in and be patient to capture those authentic moments. While Armenian Street and Chew Jetty are must-see locations, don’t forget to explore the lesser-known streets. You’ll discover hidden gems and more opportunities for unique photos. Using versatile gear is another important tip; having both my Contax G1 for film and Fujifilm X-T4 for digital gave me a lot of flexibility.
